Gun Control Efforts

For at least a day after the school shooting in Connecticut I was thinking it was a bad example to move us to implement new controls on guns. The first reports simply said the gunman had two hand guns and a rifle.

Later I learned the handguns were weapons often used in law enforcement and the rifle was a combat weapon with 30-round clips.

Some caller to an NPR show today said that new laws wouldn't stop such violence, but simply create an inconvenience to the shooter. The show guests all agreed that a little more inconvenience would be welcome.

They also rightly pointed out that no new laws would be about stopping all future gun violence, but about stopping some.

They used a great analogy. We don't erase all traffic laws simply because they are violated frequently. We increase enforcement and continue to save some lives.
