Death Penalty

William Davis was sentenced to death today for killing three family members a few years ago. It happened around the corner from us and we've followed the case from the fateful day.

The sentence has put a focus on the issue of capital punishment in our family. We admit our bias. Colleen had met two of the women murdered. We didn't know them well, but we certainly sympathize with the family.

As a rule, I have a problem with capital punishment. It is inconsistent with our basic value of human life. It is applied inconsistently. I also find it hard to accept that an innocent could be executed, no matter how rarely it happens. Taking a life should be a last resort.

The personal connection with the recent case makes it hard to maintain that opposition. I don't envy the jurors having to face that decision of another's life or death.
